12 Principles of Animation

Since Disney’s hand-drawn animation, nothing has changed when it comes to the basic principles of animation. The success of Disney was not just in the design of Mickey and friends but in the way the characters were put into motion.

At Saturday’s Ycademy Seminar we will explain the

12 Principles of Animation

and see, how to apply them with After Effects.

1. Slow in – slow out

Acceleration and deceleration is created with Easy Ease in and out functions is AE. The effect creates fluid motion.

2. Anticipation

Anticipation designs the action leading to the actual movement, like the backwards swing before hitting a ball with a golf club. Anticipation prepares the viewer for the action which will occur. Surprise actions can be more effective without anticipation.

3. Squash and Stretch

Squashing and stretching blows life into a volume. The rule is, not to change the volume while designing the effect: a vertical squash goes with a horizontal stretch.

4. Arc

Objects tend to move along an arc, rather than along straight lines. In After Effects we animate along a path.

5. Straight Ahead Action vs. Pose to Pose

Straight Ahead Action refers to drawing frame by frame, while Pose to Pose refers to designing first the key-poses and then filling in the frames in-between, hence the terms of “keyframe” and “tweening”.”

6. Staging

Staging refers to the act of drawing the audiences attention to important actions or events in the movie. It has to do with camera positioning and handling and composition.

7. Exaggeration

Well placed exaggeration can make movements more interesting.

8. Follow Through and Overlapping Action

Follow Through refers to the motion of objects after the action while Overlapping Action means that an action does not have to stop when or before another starts.

9. Secondary Action

Secondary action makes the principal action more interesting. While the principal action may be a man walking, secondary actions could be arm swinging, movements with the head and so on.

10. Timing

Speed of action impacts on perception and emotion created. One of the most difficult principles to master, often expressed with the distance between two keyframes in After Effects.

11. Solid Drawing

This does not really refer to After Effects but to other programs you may use to draw objects, such as Photoshop.

12. Appeal

Objects need to be appealing to draw in the audience. This is not only true for animated characters. The best animation is not eye-catching if what you show is not designed in an appealing or charismatic way.

After Effects is not just about motion, it’s about expression, design, appeal and emotion created. An animation designer is therefore a multi-tasker and the best are multi-talents!

The Ycademy Seminar in December will focus on Christmas Media, namely on working with Adobe After Effects.In stead of producing static Christmas cards participants will be able to add motion, sound and other effects to produce a stunning customized Christmas Clip.

The Christmas Media Design Seminar will take place on December 17, 201, starting at 1 pm London time and closing at 9 pm London time.

As we have only one day available for the December Seminar, we will use all Daily Call sessions for an introduction into the secrets of After Effects. All pre-seminar calls will be recorded as well and video tutorials will be made available to seminar participants.

Goals

Acquire enough After Effects related knowledge to be able to work with After Effects templates and to customize, adapt or modify them.

All participants will create a customized Christmas Clip.

Materials

Participants need Adobe’s After Effects, preferably CS 5.5 64 bit version, however CS4 running on 32 bit will do.

For Customization, you may want to use some of your family photos or, if you create a business clip, some business related pictures , screen-shots or graphics.

All other materials, namely professional templates, will be provided.

1. How to Edit Digital Photos

Taking photos has become a relatively easy and cheap task with the proliferation of accessible digital cameras and mobile devices, such as smart-phones and tablets. Of course the quality of the pictures varies in function of the quality of the camera and the skill of the photographer. Some of the shortcomings can be compensated by improving skills and post editing.

The Seminar will deal with editing digital photos using namely Photoshop and OnOne Professional Photo Tools.

Editingand post editing have a lot to do with the purpose of the image as well as on the destination platform. We will look into different options and detail specific requirements for the mobile web.

OnOne Professional Photo Editing Tools

The above sample shows that editing makes the image heavier! The more filters, masks and brushes we apply the more Kb we ad and the slower the image will load once on the site. Here it is getting interesting: the above image counts 124 Kb as shot (it has just been cropped to 300 pixels wide), then we have added 29 px while editing and in the end reduced the JPEG quality to end up with a final 27 Kb, i.e. 2 Kb less than what we added by editing, amd yet, the image is more dynamix, vibrant and sharper.

In order to use editing tools efficiently, we must acquire some knowledge about the different filters and masks. We need to learn some terminology and we need to learn to translate the desired results into professional lingo, so that we use the appropriate tool to achieve the desired result.

The absence of such knowledge results in a “roulette approach” and therefore to unpredictable results and bloated file sizes.

Publishing Images and Photos with Semiomantics XO on WordPress

With WordPress 3 many new features became available and Semiomantics exploits them with the recent XO versions. In as much as images, videos and galleries are concerned, XO provides special post formates which are ideal for Media Publishng.

We will explain the custom formates and how to create a specific media feed stream throughout an XO publishing Network.

Build a Photo Blog

To apply the new skills and knowledge, we will build a photo content management system on XO. To anticipate the work and to make the best use of the time we dispose of, we will start building the Photo Site during the 2 Pre-Seminar calls on Tuesday and Thursday next. Listen Up London

Listen Up London is an amazing young brand for media production. Christian George’s talent is obvious, reason why people like Global Sports US entrust Listen Up London with media production. Recently I had the opportunity to provide Listen Up London with some animated Logo footage which is added to clips shut and edited by Christian.

Looking at Listen Up London’s Clips and Photographic work at You Tube and Tumblr, I though it was worth the while promoting my friend and his business, the more that he is living a passion and a dream he is realizing at the sacrifice of many distractions.

In fact Christian has bought appropriate equipment based on a Canon 500D to shoot high quality clips which correspond to the standards customers require these days.

The features picture here is not by Christian, but I just liked this snapshot taken at the Global US Store in London. I pinched it from Christian’s Tumblr and did some post editing as you can see.

Working for Christian was a pleasure, refreshing, quick and direct: our communication was about entirely mobile based and to make things easier, I just registered the domain ListenUpLondon.com to load the previews of our project.

Christian does not yet have his own domain, host and website, but it’s on hist list of priorities. In the mean time I use the domain to build a promotional website for him under the umbrella of semiomantics developments. The goal is to create an XO based website which can be inserted into facebook. The actual site is up and running. The facebook implementation is under development.

In any case, I am sure, in the near future, Listen Up London will be seen all over the place and from Semiomantics we wish Christian all the best with his passion and great work!

Protect your Website Content 2

Protect Content with Copyrights

My previous post included some interesting features in terms of Copyright mentions. There are on-site and off-site solutions which you may have noticed. The post discusses the various possibilities adding copyright notices, not their efficiency against content scrapers.

On my site I publish a Copyright mention in the footer:

These Copyright notices are standard and most WordPress blogs add them automatically. Such notices can be more or less sophisticated; automated vCard notices are possible and exist in may themes by default.

For the purpose of this example I have used the vCard entry at the bottom of the post, just above the comment area as visible here:

The author box is part of the post content and therefore an on-site as well as off-site feature:

The disadvantage of the html author box is that it messes up the clean code of the post. Such boxes should be edited in clean code and inserted accordingly.

As mentioned above, the Authors Box at the bottom of the post is part of the post and therefore transferable by Feed (RSS, Atom). Content scrapers usually scrap by using feeds and by importing content to their own web sites.

Author Boxes with clean content are interesting and accepted also by most directories, for as long as they contain only one link.

An interesting idea is to add copy right notices to the out-put feed. The principle is: you add automatically a copyright notice to every post in your feeds, without having these notices on display on your own website.

The Authors Box has been imported while the vCard has disappeared as we did not embed it into the code (loop) but served it using an in-line widget. To pass on the vCard, the corresponding code can be embedded into the WP code. The vCard delivers clean code and could be a better solution then the HTML Author’s Box.

The most visible notice is delivered on top of the post, however in a more elegant way than the shrewd wording chosed for the purpose of this example.

6 Steps to Add a Facebook iFrame Application to your Fans Page

This Tutorial will show how to set up a Facebook iFrame Application in 6 Steps. Since Facebook changed once more the rules Fan Page content is to be added via iFrame Applications. There are some App providers out there who offer quick solutions namely for people who do not have own hosting; these external solutions have the disadvantage that you are not in full control of your frame and that you promote rather the App provider than yourself. For our customers we use a more professional approach. Here below you will find the basic 10 steps to create your own iFrame Application.

What are Facebook iFrame Applications

As of February 2011 facebook allows iFrames on Page Tabs as well as on Canvas Pages. The corresponding Applications don’t need to be activated (using the app submission procedure).

In short an iFrame Application allows to load external content to your Fan or Business Page.

The advantage of Facebook iFrame Applications

As your content is hosted on your own host, you may edit in standard HTML, CSS and JavaScript like on any other web page.

The disadvantage of Facebook iFrame Applications

You need your own hosting and be able to edit HTML, besides that, the freedom is yours.

1. Set up your HTML page on your Server

For the purpose of this Tutorial I will create the frame for an application called YORGOO on my cPanel Server.

Create a new folder in your root called “app” into which you will place all your future applications. In the app folder we create a new folder with the name of the new application, in my case: ‘yorgoo’, like so:

In the ‘yorgoo’ applicatuion folder we create an index page and a style-sheet, like so:

Edit index.html and paste the following minimal content into it:










HERE COMES YOUR CONTENT

Note on line 4 we refer to our style-sheet which we edit and paste in the size of the page. Facebook allows for a display of maximum 520 pixels x 800 pixels. Ideally you keep your content within these limits, however you could also go wider and deeper when editing at the price that either the content will not be displayed to its full extent or that you need to accept scroll bars.

I will keep it sober here and punch into my style-sheet the following:

 }

Note on line 9 we reserve the space within the main content container for whatever you wish to add to your page: this is where you edit your visible page content. For the time being I have just added some text for testing purposes, by replacing the above lines 8 — 10 with the following:

2. Install the Facebook Developer Application

Now let’s head over to Facebook, sign up if you don’t have an account or just log in.

Visit THIS LINK and if prompted, click the Allow button.

3. Create your iFrame Application

Click on the Set Up New App Button:

Now enter a Name for your Application:

Agree to the terms and Create App.

You will be prompted with a security check (paptcha), just submit the suggested words.

4. Edit the About Page

Add a description and some eye-catching icons, like so:

5. Facebook Integration

Select “Facebook Integration” from the left-hand menu and scroll down to Page Tabs — this is what will be shown in your Facebook sidebar menu:

If you have a security certificate installed on your server, add also the secure link using https:// (people logging on to Facebook using a secure connection cannot see your page if you don’t provide a secure link — they will be redirected to your wall).

Save your changes.

6. Add your App to your Fan Page

Select from the menu Application Profile Page

Select Add to My Page from the sidebar menu and select the page to which you wish to add the Application:

Head over to your page and you will now see the new tab!

As our previous post showed: images are great to improve the surfing experience of our visitors. The way we edit however is an important component for different reasons: if we embed large pictures into a post or page, the first impression can be smashing but it can be at the expense of fast loading pages. There are a few remedies to the loading problems you may encounter.

How to assure fast page loading

The best solution from a user’s point of view: get a fast internet connection.If I am running the previous post on a 24 MB/s line, it’s a piece of cake. If you live in a country where fast lines are not available, then you are at the mercy of webmasters who load less demanding stuff.

Thumbnail images

Thumbnails load fast and can then expand to most any size. Chose a thumbnail format which is still big enough to attract the curiosity of your visitor.

Example: this is a 120×80 thumbnail. It gives a ‘small’ idea about what the big picture could be.

Embed medium size Images

If a picture is less attractive as a thumbnail, just embed a medium size format:

Example: 300 wide for this one.

One big image in a post will not hurt. But if you embed multiple pictures, loading time will increase dramatically.

Example: 500 wide.

The featureÂ requires at least one file server and one dedicated video transcoder. Considerable amount of PHP coding and system administration skills are required to install, customize and deploy these modules. I let you appreciate the beauty of the architecture on the image above.

The cost of the Project

There are two main cast factors: hosting and development. Development can be kept low as we can do most if not all of the required tasks in house. Hosting is another issue: without the Video features we have reached the limits of a dedicated server with just 12 users who have loaded some 80 sites all in all and who have set up over 400 feeds coming in, without counting internal cross feeding. Massive pinging and links out complete the fast growing expansive communication network.

Our tests show that hosting cost will mainly depend of the features we allow users to dispose of. However, the ideal would be to preserve complete freedom of expression and publishing, using the best and most efficient techniques. To exactly evaluate such cost we need to run additional tests, namely with the video streaming feature in combination with the best Semiomantics features.

The Economic Model

Cost for the YORGOO Media products can be covered in two ways:

Free YORGOO Media users with access to basic functions: Admin reserves the right to place ads to free sites.

Professional users with ads free sites will have to upgrade on a per feature, per month or per year base.

The issue was about: how to tag and publish in the most efficient way a post targeting people who are looking for accommodation in Great Brak River on the Garden Route in South Africa.

I had told Hanno that I have been testing different methods recently and that I had some astonishing results with a ‘new’ or a different way of tagging bringing the Semiomantics tuning advantages yet to another level.

To increase the challenge, I wanted to use a brand new blog, in fact I started posting from the blog we set up last night at during the Ycademy call. The site is at Africa YORGOO Media and if you check it out: the configuration of the site is not yet completed, however the basic Semiomantics set up on YORGOO Media gave me the necessary confidence to take the bet.

The post content suggested by Hanno was a recent post on Garden Route Directory by Hanno Coetzee which we just copied and pasted into the new site.

A second YouTube module is on display right under the featured Images on top left of the site. We are testing the home page holding 3 YouTube players now, the third one being in the sidebar right, close to the bottom of the page.

This second player displays brand ads Nike, Adidas, Jordan and others. It’s just one more media component which can be used for other purposes, for example to display video clips of customization of sneakers and caps or Limited Edition products.

Just for the record: the third video, located in the right sidebar at the bottom is the latest clip loaded to Global Sports US own built-in video gallery.

Global will select which features it wants to display. As they are all loaded, one can also imagine a changing display, depending on the mood, the weather, the price of tofu, or other good, scientific founded reasons.

SlideDeck Pro on Semiomantics XO for WordPress

Probably on of the best plug-ins for WordPress is SlideDeck Pro, an full featured media slider, which, in its Pro version, improves WordPress based websites dramatically.

The good news is: it displays perfectly on mobile devices such as the iPhone4:

These are screenshots from the iPhone 4 which show the quality of the display. All slider functions work perfectly on iPhone, Android and other smart-phones.

News

Building professional media sliders with SlideDeck pro will be one of the main topics of the Ycademy March Seminar. Also, Semiomantics is preparing a Semiomantics XO add-on with SlideDeck Pro for a small fee.

The only problem we see with SlideDeck is it’s price: $99 for a single site license. For Developers the Semiomantics XO add-on will be available for a fraction of that price.

Also the XO SlideDeckPro will be the heart of the new YORGOO Blaster :-).
