Step by Step Guide to Evo2

Ycademy’s Evo2 Seminar covered all modules of Evo2, however there was not enough time to practically exercise during Workshops. For this reason we will publish here a step by step guide about how to realize an Evo2 project.

There will be a tutorial per module used to realize a simple project. In order to follow the Guide you will need to have access to an Evo2 script as well as to a tool to re-size and crop images. Finally you will need to dispose of some media, images and eventually videos.

We recommend to use Photoshop where available or Pain which is a free tool coming with Windows.

For the purpose of this tutorial we will implement a simple project called YorgoMan 2010, which will highlight YorgoMan’s year. In as much as I am concerned, I will use Photoshop to edit images, however paint will do as well.

Edit Theme CSS with Firebug

Tonight’s call will focus on the use of Firebug to quickly test and edit your Theme style. Please download and install it. Firebug integrates with Firefox and is immediately ready for use.

Firebug is one of the most efficient tools for professional developers and newbies alike.

1. Have you ever edited your website’s style? And, have you ever had a hard time to find within the CSS style-sheet the exact block of code you needed to edit to implement a desired modification? With Firebug, you will see immediately which line of your code you need to edit and best of all, you can test the modification on the fly before actually hacking your CSS code.
2. Having Errors on your page, in your CSS or HTML code? Firebug is an ideal debugger pointing you directly to the problem area and suggesting the necessary modifications.

If you are not yet using Firebug, it’s time to get started tonight :-).

YSlow integrates with Firebug and provides important additional optimization information. Download and install from HERE. We will look into YSlow as well at tonight’s call.

Ycademy has released it’s new pricing policy.

The basic Ycademy Pro  contribution remains at $30 per month. Ycademy Pros get full credit for this amount when buying a Seminar ticket for example as well as huge reductions on all products from Ycademy, YORGOO and Semiomantics.

The price for the Ycademy Author site for new subscribers is set at $ 250 until March 31. The Author site is a last generation Semiomantics site as retailed by Semiomantics at $1250. The WordPress update to version 2.8.6 is not a big deal and should not trigger any problems. Just update from your Dashboard using automatic update. The new version includes just two fixes which will not impact on your wp configuration and settings.

Important Webmaster Training

How to let your Content Scroll over the Background

Scr5olling over a background image may save resources, namely if you use a large background picture. Also it gives you more control over the way your blog displays on different monitors and with different resolution settings.

On my design blog you see an example.

Transparent WordPress scrolls over Background

CSS lets any element have a background image and or color. Using the appropriate standard properties, you are in control of the background.

Our Web design Workshops 6 and 11 have already developed the topic.

CSS goes beyond the background atributes of HTML.

The CSS Background Properties are:

• background-image
• background-attachment
• background-repeat
• background-position
• background
• background-color

In order to control scrolling or not scrolling over the background we need to define the background attachment.

The background-attachment property can take two values: scroll or fixed. The default value is “scroll” meaning that the background scrolls with the content.

If we want to obtain a static background and scroll content dynamically over that background, then we use the value “fixed”.

On the mentioned Design Blog, the body background style is defined as follows:

body {
background: #fff2d4 url(images/wall1680c.jpg) repeat-x;
background-attachment: fixed;
margin: 0 auto;
padding: 0;
font-size: 14px;
color: #000125;
}


We are interested in the following two lines:

background: #fff2d4 url(images/wall1680c.jpg) repeat-x ;
background-attachment: fixed;

As you see the background color is defined with a color and an image (the color may load faster). The image has a width of 1680 pixels. We tile the image horizontally for the case that visitors may use larger resolutions than 1680 pixels wide. Vertical tiling is not really required as we scroll over the background. (Of course some visitors with a mega screen may have a vertical resolution bigger than the 1250 pixels of the image, but the bottom of the image fades into white).

The second line defines the background attachment: here we use fixed.

Now our page content scrolls over the background.

Note: Make sure your background image is not too heavy! On the Design Blog I have reduced 4.5 MB to 130 KB which is still big but it opens fast enough with most visitor’s ADSL line.

WordPress Personal CMS and Blog

WordPress is an ideal basic framework on which anyone can build a more or less sophisticated Content Management System and personal Blog. Semiomantics uses WordPress as the Backbone for its own framework developments with the goal to increase the publishing power and to optimize the visibility and surfing experience of site visitors.

While the technicalities are one part of Semiomantics Semantic Communication Technology, the look and feel of a site is the longer the more an important part of development. WordPress Seminar for Authors

At tonight’s pre-seminar call we will prepare the customization of the website, starting with color schemes and graphics. We will also distribute the new Semiomantics XO. Please look out for Bianca’s mail today.

Tonight as from 8 pm GMT we will start customizing our sites. First we will apply the preferred color scheme. Please make sure you know your color codes.

Then we will create a header graphic with the dimension 500 x 80 pixels.

Finally we will create back-ground graphics for the site and the sidebars.

While the images can be created with simple tools, I would prefer using Adobe’s Photoshop or equivalent. If you don’t have Photoshop installed, please download and install the free open-source equivalent GIMP. With Gimp you can edit Photoshop files (.psd) easily as well as adapt existing graphics with more precision than with Webgraphics Creator.

We will show step by step how to use GIMP for our needs during tonight’s work-shop.

In fact, a back-ground can be just a color (color code in the css style sheet) or an image. Images usually are small and then tiled. For the purpose of the exercise we will use an image of the size of 8 x 8 pixels. The pixels are arranged to produce a grid or a hatch and colored according to taste.
