New XO53 Theme for WordPress

What is XO53?

XO53 is the working title of a new playground for Semiomantics WordPress Development. Based on XO2011 we are experimenting with HTML5 and CSS3 syntax for future release. The goal is to finally end up without any Flash Components and with better semantics.

Great stuff! Meanwhile though, while we still have the flash components, I ask: I have on my “do list” to replace the NextGen gallery on my author blog with one of our flash components, nextgen is so expensive in CPU time, etc etc. Now that I am ready to do it, I thought to check it out with you: do the flash components use THAT much less computer resources? Will I really be gaining something meaningful with the replacement?

      Hi Boruch,

when we recommended NextGen Gallery, WordPress was by far not capable to manage, handle and tag images the way it is today. NextGen is a great image management tool which has it’s price as you state: server resources, namely memory.
Also, NextGen makes sense if you display loads of different Galleries on your site and if you want to improve the semantics and style of display in an easy way.
Flash components such as the components we use on the home page or attached to the header are limited in the sense that they are static display elements and do not give you any advantage from a semantic and SEO point of view. They are more a sort of an additional attraction of the site your visitors should appreciate from a visual point of view.
NextGen is an image management software while the flash components improve the looks of the site more than anything else; sure the xml files are readable by the bots but SEO is not the primary objective.
Flash Components will not replace NextGen if you use NextGen for what it has been written. If however you use NextGen just to display one Gallery throuhout your site (in the sidebar for example or attached to the header, then it does not make much sense to run NextGen. Your Flash Components uses next to no server resources.

You may of course change the content to something more interesting such as art, photography or the Kamasutra :-).
