Web Design Workshop September 9, 2009

Yes­ter­day we started to look at the Nav­i­ga­tion bars with focus on the hor­i­zon­tal cat­e­gory nav­i­ga­tion. The script of the Work­shop is pub­lished under Web Design Work­shop Nav­i­ga­tion. Today we will con­tinue on the Cat­e­gory nav­i­ga­tion, namely with the drop-down menu.

Before enter­ing today’s work­shop, here are some notes con­cern­ing issues observed yesterday:

Lar­rie Perkins Online Tax Filing

We observe Larrie’s attrac­tive color scheme when hov­er­ing. Note at the bot­tom of the shot: posts are signed by “admin”; I would sug­gest to edit the user account and switch from admin to Lar­rie Perkins as Nick­name and Dis­play Name.

This site went down after the work­shop due to a cache error, see below.

Felisa Ryan Fund-raising

Vivid col­ors here with the advan­tage that most any mon­i­tor can ren­der the basic col­ors. The mod­i­fi­ca­tions on the site were not vis­i­ble to par­tic­i­pants because of a cache error; see below.

If you have the Super Cache plu­gin installed and run­ning, dis­able it while design­ing and edit­ing your style-sheet.

To dis­able go to your Dash­board — Set­tings — WP Super Cache and dis­able from there. Don’t dis­able the plu­gin from Dash­board — Plugins!

Alter­na­tively, leave the Super Cache on but empty the cache and select “Don’t cache pages for logged in users”. Then update settings.

- Please make sure you have loaded the new Semi­oman­tics XO ver­sion to your site: just copy and paste the new xo folder via FTP into your wp-content/themes folder over­writ­ing the exist­ing xo folder.

- Make sure you have cat­e­gories and sub-categories con­fig­ured; if you don’t have sub­cat­e­gories, just cre­ate some 2 or 3 sub-categories under an exist­ing cat­e­gory and call them Cat­e­gory 1, Cat­e­gory 2, Cat­e­gory 3.

- Make sure you have a post in each Cat­e­gory and Sub-Category. I have described how I han­dled the prob­lem HERE.
