Network Society

Technology enhances the development of our 21st century Network Society where everyone can be directly linked with everyone and where everyone is ultimately controlled by … everyone. (The small village principle).

Online Personal Data Profiles, behavioral profiles, links and access, connections, it’s all working into the same direction and it looks a if, with the rise of the network society, we program its fall, unless we can get rid of the emotional baggage we are dragging with us.

Today we may feel that Google or Facebook or other large network owners play the role of the Big Brother like did earlier the KGB, CIA, StaSi or such like organizations set up by the political power in place to keep the elements of society on put. Today, the local administration knows less about its subjects than Facebook and such like networks and a shift of power is noticeable in as much as influence, mind control and opinion leadership is concerned.

Communication

Communication

Democracy online

Social Networks can constitute a great counter power if they are directed into the right future. Social networks could only expand in a world where humans feel restricted, unsatisfied and lacking  freedom of expression or communication. Social Networks also put away social barriers which may lock people into a social cast system selecting according to economic, beauty, ‘popularity’ and such like criteria. Popularity in Social Networks found a new definition.

In many ways democracy is when the power is with the people and when people can contribute to the direction social and political evolution will take. Elections are too slow of a process to satisfy peoples fast changing opinions. It’s not about electing leaders, it’s more about single issues where people want to have their say.

Politicians, elected leaders can be influenced by public opinion. Polls don’t do the trick really anymore since the crowd on Facebook becomes more representative and influential than any Poll. Leaders such as Barack Obama or the French President Sarkozy have noticed that and draw conclusions from this shift of social behavior by building personal networks in Facebook and such like.

The Question is: are Social Networks used and abused by their owners or will they in the future continue to allow allow free networking, expression and unbiased publishing of opinions?

If yes, then we may move forward to the past, where democracy was based on permanent consultation with constituents. An interesting Concept!

Get rid of your Emotional Trash

A hypothetical Network Society, where virtual and physical become one requires however to break down a few more barriers, namely on the emotional side of things.

The notion of Privacy has not much room in such a society, where everything is publicly exposed. Exhibition of your soul is the name of the game, abandon of your emotional foot print and identity to be replaced by … showtime. Life plays on stage where we manage the profile, looks and behavior, where we style our personal exhibitionism in function of likability factors and where the rat race consists in beating the competitors on behavioral and personal profiling schemes as stored and defined in the data bases of large networks such as Facebook.

Sensitivity about privacy, about what is right and what is wrong, about personal preferences will change. Tolerance levels will change and online ghettos will expand. Tomorrow you will not need to commit murder and physical war to eliminate your enemy, you blast him from the face of Facebook with a few mouse-clicks.

Tomorrow, if you are not like a dog on the leash of Social Networks and all your ‘friends’ there, you will be a nobody, a sad existence somewhere between a plant and an animal. Cybermen will form the ‘real society’ and only who is connected and traceable has a chance of participating in this new society.

New opinion leaders will emerge and use and abuse the new power; not intelligence and vision will dominate but showtime and marketing, demagogy and mind control will prevail. The power of expression and communication will have to become a main topic at school. Forget about your sensitivities, just go out and fish in the huge pool and build your own little society or adhere to other mini societies to take your due spot in this new world.

Is this the world you want to build and live in tomorrow?

The Fall of the  Network Society

The great idea about the Cyber Society hurts itself on an important stumbling block, at least for the time being: we are humans with a certain genetic and emotional profile. Human needs are, at least for the time being, not restricted to life on stage and there is more between heaven and earth than just a personal and behavioral online profile serving as connector between unlimited numbers of other cyber-profiles.

Life on stage has this particular thing: once on stage, everyone profits from initial goodwill. From there, you can only lose, as soon as you talk, sing, write or express yourself in any possible way. Your contributions to cyber-society can back-fire faster than you shoot and your future, also in low-tech environments may be jeopardized because of inappropriate content you may have loaded or inappropriate content being made available about you online.

The power of Social Networks may well become a matter of public concern and state intervention will be the consequence. Interestingly, the state is well advised to initiate the move using … social network marketing.

Socal Network Marketing consists in finding a way of influencing masses towards or against issues of concern. Mobilizing the masses through social networks will allow public authorities to gain the power back as only the public powers will be able to protect individual social network users from the abuse of exactly those features which have lead to the rise of social networks.

For the time being, let’s enjoy them and experiment with daily new features and applications allowing people to connect and to stay in touch. And let’s learn how to publish our profiles and messages in an efficient way on Social Networks and our own sites.

At a later stage we must become more critical and select well, which applications we should use to serve OUR purpose best. Our kids will need our best guidance!
