Can your System run Windows 7

In general, if your PC or Laptop runs Windows Vista, it can run Windows 7. To find out exactly what will run and where eventual problems may occur, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft.

Upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7

The upgrade is a smooth matter and what runs on Windows Vista should also run on Windows 7. During the install procedure Windows 7 will check your system and log eventual problem zones. The upgrade will take time, be prepared to let it run for hours (in my case it was 15 hours) namely if your hard drive is packed with hundreds of Gigabytes of data.

Installing Windows 7 on your Laptop

If your laptop runs Windows Vista, it will run Windows 7. If you use XP, then run the Upgrade Advisor for a check.

From Windows XP to Windows 7

Microsoft requires a clean install if you wish to upgrade from Windows 7. Furthermore, the note on Microsoft’s  Upgrade Advisor Page is self explanatory:

..And while we don’t recommend it, should you choose to upgrade your current PC from Windows XP or another operating system to Windows 7, we recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. You’ll need to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs.”

If your computer cannot run Windows-7, I would strongly recommend going the route of a new computer with Windows 7 already installed. Your computer is already two generations of OS’s old. It’s only get more expensive.

In any case if you use the internet increasingly in relation to media, there seems to be no other way than to get a computer which can handle media efficiently.
