GRANDE FINALEIN THE BIRTHPLACE OF MODERN SPORTS

Vouliagmeni hosts the final stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2009

With the event in Vouliagmeni the traditional sport of cliff diving is completing its most challenging and progressive season ever. After seven stops the cradle of competitive sports hosts the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series’ grande finale on September 20th at Lake Vouliagmeni – just outside Athens (GRE).
The Colombian Orlando Duque is just a step away from the overall title, but it’s still too soon to say that it’s over.

Mathematically, the scoring is apparently decisive for the title. Even if runner up Gary hunt wins the decisive stop, Orlando Duque needs only a 4 place to claim the overall title. The Colombian arrives in Greece with an advantage of nine points; but as he explains by himself, it is still too soon to celebrate: “The question of the title cannot just be summed up with numbers, and as we have seen in the last legs anything can happen and there are no foregone winners.
Gary Hunt is clearly on the up-and-up and a wrong move, an injury or a less inspired moment could throw it all away”.

At the last two stops in Hamburg and Sisikon Duque became only 4th and 3rd – the victories went to Englishman Hunt and Artem Silchenko (RUS). Those two are definitely the most prominent representatives of a new generation of athletes pushing the veterans and the sport. 25 year-old Hunt, who was on the podium at
each single stop, gives hint that he may again have a trick up his sleeve for Vouliagmeni; “I have a new dive in my head and I am going to train intensively to be able to do it in the final.”

The high diving action will be centered in the amazing location around Lake Vouliagmeni, only a header away from the city. A fresh water lake famous for its healing properties and associated with many legends and mystic stories about voracious creatures, dangerous whirlpools and hidden treasures. To the athletes’ joy, the average annual temperature in the water is a pleasant 24°C.

In a final which is expected to be hot in all senses, the competition will be held in late afternoon, a fact which will clearly be an additional challenge for those who have been invited to perform a farewell sequence of dives from a board mounted 26 meters high on the rocky sides of the lake.
