Digital Photography

This time the focus is not on the camera and the technicalities but the composition, framing and style of your photos. A great picture depends less on the technical means than on the educated mind, eye and creativity of the photographer. You can shoot a great pic using a mobile phone, while your Leica M9 exploit may not even impress a monkey :-).

The principle is: stop taking pictures, create images.

We will focus on composition and styles to improve our skills.

Having said that, depending on the kind of photos you are shooting, you will need the appropriate gear; sports photography require long focal length lenses, street photography is done best with fast lenses up to 50 mm and so on. However, if you shoot in normal light conditions, even a low end digital photo camera will do …

Seminar Participants will get the latest literature and press pertaining to digital photography.

Of course improvement is always possible and to compensate partially for the shortcomings of your camera, you may want to use some post editing software which will give your pics that professional look you imagined when taking the shot.

Photo Editing with Photoshop and beyond

Using Photoshop for web design is one thing, dealing with Photos i a professional way is yet another challenge. Professionals often pair Photoshop with some handy and high profile plugins, be it to facilitate the workflow or to quickly achieve desired effects with minimum data loss.

Photo editing has two aspects:

  1. Editing for the web
  2. Editing for print

While for web publishing images are downscale to 8-bit channel and 72 dpi, we preserve a maximum of data and solid 300 dpi for print output. Whether you use a top notch flagship cam or a low-end point and shoot device, the difference is hardly noticeable in smaller web formats, while the quality camera has a clear advantage on large size prints.

Nevertheless, professional photo tools allow us to improve dramatically the quality of images originating from lower end cams. We will install and use some of the top rated software in conjunction with Photoshop to give that ultimate touch to our snaps. Look forward to some surprising results!

Printing and Publishing Images

After editing images for the purpose of printing them, we will look into two popular ways of self-publishing photos in form of a photo book (private books or public shop items). Time permitting we will also look into popular workflows using Lightroom 4 to publish galleries directly to the internet.
